salmon hike part 0ne

The annual visit to Hardy Falls to check out the Kokanee spawning was an awsome experience this year.

The fish we came to see.

This is Humphrey the male kokanee salmon puppet.

We followed Humphrey over to the designated presentation area and all the kids gathered around and took their seats on the benches.

Some weren't interested in a front row seat....

The presentation was geared towards our young group of kids...Marnie described the mating and spawning process with humphrey and rosie the kokanee cut-outs.

The land locked kokanee that we have here in the Okanagan are truly amazing and children and adults alike learned alot from the presentation.

We learned about the life cycle of the kokanee. Our new word for the day was "redd" the name used to describe the nest the female kokanee digs with her tail to lay her eggs in.

After listening about the life cycle , the kids saw these test tubes with "real" samples.

So cool!

Can you taste the excitement? Marnie brought out her dead kokanee which she had retrieved from the stream that morning.

We checked out the inards too.

The kids got up close and personal.

Salmon anyone?

They were very good listeners.

Marnie and the dead kokanee held their attention.

It was time to walk down to the stream and check out the kokanee first hand. Woohoo!

Such a beautiful place.

The kokanee were so cool!

They were huge and very active and we spent a good amount of time hanging out with them.

The dead salmon along the banks were interesting too.

Part Two Salmon hike

It's that time of year again! The salmon are spawning and it's always a cool thing to check out.
We headed out to Hardy Falls in Peachland to check out the action first hand.

We had already learned alot about the salmon and their life cycle from our awsome parks interpreter and were ready for a free for all hike.

We stayed together and tried to stay together as a group because there had been a few bears hanging out in the area. No worries with this bunch of kids.....all the bears within a 50km radius took off.

We finished up lunch and took to the trail.

Amazing how the fish swim up this stream.

The path to the waterfalls.

Beautiful!

The super cool waterfall at the end of the hike.

Astrid wanted her picture taken by the waterfall.

It was a warm and sunny fall day.

The kids by the waterfall.

Felting project cont'd

These are the beautiful squares on a green felt backing.

The mammas checked for layout and composition.

Then the edges were stiched in place.

Then some of the children got started needle felting more colour onto their square.

Everyone cooperated well and took turns with the felting needles and sponges.

Hared at work.

The wooden heart Astrid sewed onto her square.

Her turn to add more colour.

She really enjoyed the process.

All the kids were excited, yet focused on their project.

It turned out BEAUTIFUL!
